10th World Water Forum 2024, Indonesia
Date : Nov 2024
JAKARTA - The World Water Forum is a big international forum in the water sector, which has been held since 1997 every 3 years in different locations all over the world. In its tenth edition, Indonesia became the host of this international event from 18th to 25th May 2024 in Bali. This large forum is an event that gathers many people from all levels and areas, including government agencies, multilateral institutions, academia, civil society, and the private sector to share knowledge, experiences, and practices regarding a wide range of topics related to water.
Joko Widodo, the President of the Republic of Indonesia (at the moment when the event was held), attended the 10th World Water Forum and stated that water sustainability is one of the main global issues. He further said that several important agendas of this event are to find solutions, innovations, and joint actions for solving the problems of clean water availability and sanitation, food (such as food security), and energy (such as energy security), as well as mitigation of natural disasters such as floods and droughts.
In this international event attended by participants from many countries worldwide, Nippon Koei (NK) took part as one of the exhibitors. Joining the Japan pavilion with other organizations from Japan, NK provided an utterly informative display and explanation about its extensive services and distinctive technology in the water sector.
Here are the information and technology shown at NK’s booth in the 10th World Water Forum:
1. Dam Operation Digital Transformation
Digital Transformation in Reservoir Dam Operations
NK Implemented the digitalization for the operations of the reservoir dam in the Pa Sak Josalid Dam, Thailand, by utilizing the Japanese Weather Radar Technology to promptly assess the flood risks. By combining rain radar observations with long-term rainfall forecasts, accurate predictions of reservoir inflow are made possible.
Visual Understanding of Rainfall Prediction and Uncertainty
NK has developed a method using heatmaps to analyze rainfall predictions from ensemble members of the Global Ensemble Prediction System. This new approach enables visual comprehension of the intensity of rainfall and its associated uncertainties.
2. Next Generation of Maintenance Technology
Precision-Enhanced Inspection Tools
The Precision-Enhanced Inspection Tools are Advanced drones and sensors for precise, efficient inspections of dams and headrace tunnels.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) Analysis
AI and 3D modeling streamline maintenance planning, boosting operational efficiency.
Risk and Sustainability Management
Enhances water supply sustainability, cuts costs, and reduces disaster risks for safer infrastructure.
3. Flood Risk Information Platform
This platform could be the basis of a one-stop solution for providing flood risk information. The system provides prediction of water level rising, flow volume, and overflow to flood plain by inundation analysis in real-time.
4. Dam Upgrading Consulting
Various problems occur in dams that have been in operation for a long term, and sedimentation, that is commonly brought into many dams, is a serious problem at Sutami Dam in Indonesia.
NK established the best optimum countermeasures for sedimentation at its reservoir by Sediment Bypass Tunnel, by considering “Sustainability”, “Eco-friendliness”, and “Social-Environmental Impacts”.
NK provides solutions to rehabilitation/dam upgrading to ensure proper operation and maintenance of existing assets, which would pave the way for sustainable water resources management/development.
5. Water Security Compass
NK, together with the University of Tokyo and Suntory Holdings, established "The Research Initiative for Global Hydrologic Cycles in april 2022. Within this initiative, development of the interactive web platform “Water Security Compass” is underway, enabling users to explore global water resources risks on a map interface.
Utilizing the HO8 model, which factors in the effectiveness of water resource infrastructures such as dams, aqueducts, and desalination plants, as well as incorporating irrigation demands based on the meteorological conditions, NK can assess water resource risks with unprecedented accuracy. Thereafter, NK will deliver an analysis result at a world-leading spatial resolution of 5 minutes (approximately 9 km), ensuring detailed insights into water dynamics.
Additionally, tailored indices for risk assessments in regions with distinct rainy and dry seasons, such as the Asian monsoon belt, are being developed. They aim to provide valuable information to private enterprises, enabling them to make informed decisions in managing water-related risks.
6. Building Information Modeling (BIM) for Asahan 3 Hydropower Plant
The project developed a Common Data Environment (CDE) for collaboration between the Consultant, Civil, Hydro-mechanical, and Electro-mechanical Contractors for Clash detection between major design elements.
During the construction of the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), an integrated face management system was established to record the tunnel geology and support systems, with real-time monitoring of the works to allow remote supervision of the project and improve project management.
The BIM Model was developed to optimize the design and construction process, allowing collaborative, fast, and accurate decision-making.
NK provides a demonstration of BIM system implemented in Asahan 3 project to the visitors. Using Virtual Reality (VR) equipment, visitors can experience exploring clash detection using BIM. Through this kind of demonstration, visitors can have a better understanding of clash detection in developing a project using BIM.
