JAKARTA - Asahan No 3 Hydroelectric Power Plant (HEPP) is an electricity power generation project located in the North Sumatera Province about around 260 km southeast of Medan or about 30 km east of Lake Toba and is situated near the Parhitean and Pintu Pohan Villages of Asahan and Toba Samosir District in the North Sumatera Province.

On Monday, 20 January 2025, the President of Indonesia, Prabowo Subiyanto, inaugurated the Asahan No. 3 HEPP through a virtual ceremony attended by the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, and Minister of State-Owned Enterprises, Erick Thohir, together with 37 national electricity projects with a total capacity of 3.2 GW. With an installed capacity of 2x87 MW, the Asahan No 3 HEPP was the largest of the projects to be inaugurated.

As reported by the news portal of Asahan Regency Government, President Prabowo, attending the inauguration at the Jatigede Dam, highlighted the central role of the energy sector in advancing Indonesia toward becoming a modern and industrial country. He emphasized that achieving energy independence is crucial for Indonesia's progress.

Attending the inauguration in person at the Asahan No. 3 Intake , the acting officer of North Sumatera Governor, Mr. Agus Fatoni stated that by inauguration of the Asahan No. 3 HEPP, the electricity energy source in North Sumatera became very stable and is able to contribute electricity energy to the other provinces.

Furthermore, the regent of the Asahan area, Mr. H. Surya, B.Sc, stated that this Asahan No. 3 HEPP has a positive impact on the community in Asahan by increasing the local employment, increasing the wealth in the Asahan area, and supporting the regional economy.

Meanwhile, PLN (Persero) Director of Project Management and New Renewable Energy, Wiluyo Kusdwiharto, also attending the inauguration in person at the Asahan No. 3 Intake said that the Asahan No. 3 HEPP which began construction in 2019 was completed in 2024. Usually, the construction of a hydroelectric power plant can take 7 to 10 years, however, the Aahan No. 3 HEPP was built in 5 years.

"The construction of this hydroelectric power plant is probably one of the fastest in Indonesia. This is possible if there is cooperation, collaboration between PLN, contractors, and local governments. Without collaboration, it is impossible for a project of this size to be completed in five years," said Wiluyo. Source : inspirasinews.id
