Architecture and Urban Development

Back in mid-2023, ID&E Holdings (Integrated Design & Engineering) was established through the reorganization of Nippon Koei. This strategic transformation was undertaken to enhance the flexibility and autonomy of each company, enabling them to respond swiftly and effectively to the evolving market landscape and emerging demands.

As part of our long-term management vision, our business group is committed to driving sustainable growth not only in the consulting and energy sectors but also in Urban & Spatial Development—a vital area shaping the cities of tomorrow.

Guided by the concept of “Working Together Toward a Future Without Boundaries,” we embrace Cross-Border Collaboration as the core of our approach. Through this vision, we strive to deliver world-class solutions and services in Architecture and Urban Development across Indonesia.

Under the umbrella of ID&E Holdings, Nippon Koei Consulting (NK) and Nippon Koei Urban Space (NKUrban) stand as the group’s largest companies in the Architecture and Urban Development sector, combining deep expertise with innovative thinking. To further strengthen our presence and operational capacity in Indonesia, PT. Indokoei International (IKI)—a subsidiary of NK—also brings extensive experience and strong familiarity with the local market in consulting engineering and area development. The presence of Kisho Kurokawa Architect & Associates Co., Ltd., as one of the architectural companies in ID&E, brings a strong legacy of the Metabolism and Symbiosis philosophy. These timeless principles lay a solid foundation for developing sustainable, adaptive, and harmonious architectural and urban design solutions.

Together, we are committed to shaping vibrant, resilient, and sustainable cities—bridging ideas, technologies, and expertise across borders.

URBAN GROWTH COMES WITH COMPLEX CHALLENGES

Indonesia’s rapid urbanization brings both opportunities and challenges. From unplanned city expansion and traffic congestion to limited public spaces and environmental degradation, many urban areas struggle to balance development, functionality, and sustainability.

Architectural and urban development projects often face difficulties in integrating technical, social, regulatory, and environmental dimensions. These challenges demand more than just design; they require a holistic, multidisciplinary approach — where engineering precision meets visionary design thinking

OUR INTEGRATED APPROACH

Through our integrated collaboration under ID&E Holdings, our Architecture & Urban Development service represents the synergy of five companies, with each contributing unique expertise:

Nippon Koei Consulting (Japan-Indonesia)

NK has a long history in Indonesia for more than 50 years as a civil engineering consultant. NK has played a key role in many experiences in multi-sector infrastructure development in Indonesia. With the core expertise in civil engineering, water resources, renewable energy, and disaster management, we can be the technical and infrastructure backbone for sustainable infrastructure planning.

NKUrban was launched in March 2016 by the NK group. NKUrban aims to expand its business by capturing the growing needs in the architectural domain, by delivering the urban development capabilities worldwide, and combining them with the civil engineering domain. In this collaboration, NK Urban may contribute with the world-class urban planning and infrastructure integration, such as Transit-Oriented Development (TOD), and Construction Management for building/factory in the private sector. Furthermore, NKUrban has contributed to the development of building/ land use regulations in Indonesia in collaboration with authorities, demonstrating deep expertise in the Indonesia legal framework.

PT. Indokoei International (Indonesia)

Subsidiary company of NK as a local consulting engineering company in Indonesia. With their vast experiences in Indonesia, IKI can bring a good understanding of the local regulations and permits for the area development, which can be a valuable local insight in this collaboration, and ensure the smoothness of the project development.

One of the architectural companies under ID&E holdings has been a member of the NK group since 2015. Inheriting the philosophy of its owner of Metabolism and Symbiosis, Kisho Kurokawa brings the principles of design to an urban or building that grows, adapts, and can be resilient and harmonize with its environment. Ensuring a balanced relationship between people, nature, tradition, and modernity in the design.

While each company brings its own specialized expertise, our teams share a common understanding of how cities are evolving and the challenges they face. Smart city development, in our view, is part of a broader urban transformation process rooted in thoughtful planning, resilient infrastructure, and integrated urban systems. Through this perspective, we deliver architectural and urban solutions that form a strong foundation for smarter, more sustainable city growth.
